I Can’t Give You Anything But LoveとMoonlight Brings Memoriesを歌い、21コーラス中の8位。

I Can’t Give Youを持ってきたのはゲイリィのアイデア。 I Can’t Give You… /by Kaz

  1. On September 11, 2001, Tokyo Barbers flew over the Pacific Ocean to Melbourne (Australia), the venue for the Pan Pacific Barber Shop Cnvention. That was the day of the terrorist attacks in New York.

We were informed by the Convention secretariat that “A local TV station might come when we arrived in Melbourne, so please respond well”, and when we arrived at the airport, there really was a TV crew. But they did’nt know about Tokyo Barbers, they were interviewing an American team.

After entering a local hotel, we learned the significance of the matter on TV news and lost our word. The news were blocked on the plane by the press regulation, so we arrived and took a leisurely tour of the city without knowing what was going on. Our coach Gary, and the tournament guest quartet were able to enter Melbourne because they left the United States on an early flight, but after that other tournament guests from the United States were unable to attend because the plane was totally banned.

At the WHJ of the previous year, Gary refused to conduct, saying that Tokyo Barbers’ first performance should be done by the Japanese people only, but he decided to undertake the conductor from this convention(2001) after we repeated to offer.
At Gary’s training camp in April before the convention, he also coached us the new topics such as the basics of the barbershop up to that point, guidance on contest songs and choreography, attitudes toward the contest, and bargaining with judges, etc.

At this Convention, Tokyo Barbers sang “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “Moonlight Brings Memories”, finishing 8th out of 21 choruses. An Australian barbershopper gave an interesting compliment, “It’s amazing that can do such a performance with only 15 people. We also don’t compromise with the small number of people, and we have to brush up on.”

In barbershop contests, it’s common practice to sing a ballad for the first song and a second song for a breathtaking uptune (fast tempo song), but the first song was “I Can’t Give You …” we brought Gary’s idea. “I Can’t Give You…, which is a relatively new song and has a lesser-known intro, is easier to get a high score because the judges listen carefully until the song title is known.” That was Gary’s idea of bargaining with the judges. I thought that the thoughts are different of whom qualified as BHS official judge, also a regular in quartet and chorus contests. (Kaz Matsumura)
