過去に東京バーバーズ（TB）のショウに出てくれたゲストカルテットは、いずれもBHSバーバーショップハーモニーソサイエティのカルテットチャンピオンか、それに準ずる実績を持った素晴らしい人たちばかり。中でもとりわけ強い印象を受けたのはMusical Island Boysミュージカル・アイランド・ボーイズ（MIB,ニュージーランド）、2013年第8回ショウのゲストです。
それよりさかのぼること数年前、私がMIBを知ったのは、クライストチャーチ（ニュージーランド）での音楽イベントに彼らが出演したのを数回聴いたことでした。2004年から約15年にわたり、毎年5ヶ月ほど滞在（ロングステイ）していた私が最初に会った時、彼らはまだ学生だったかも知れません。その上手さにただただビックリ!
その後、当時私が毎週歌っていた地元のバーバーショップコーラス「Canterbury Plainsmen」の2012年クリスマス・コンサートに、なんとMIB と、Ringmastersリングマスターズ（RM,スゥエーデン）がゲストとして来てくれたのです。MIB はバーバーショップハーモニーソサイエティ国際大会で２位を連続して獲得、RMの方はこの年カルテットチャンピオンになっており、まさに世界ナンバーワン・ツーの組み合わせに聴衆は大絶賛、盛り上がりは最高潮でした!!
私も主催者側の一員として、空港に両カルテットを迎えに行き、ともに仲良くなりました。この時すでに、翌年のゲストカルテットにMIBを招くことが決まっていたので、彼らとも日本やTBについて、あらかじめさまざまな予備知識を伝えることができました。
そしていよいよ2013年の日本へ、第8回ショウの回想です。
ゲストのMIBは他の３人が先着、ベースのMattだけは、あのRingmastersを応援しにヨーロッパへ行き、ぎりぎりのスケジュールで来日したため、私は遅れて来たMattを出迎えに行きました。空港からのバスの中でMattは、「MCは自分たちが日本語でやる、原稿はニュージーランド人の【先生】に翻訳してもらった。」と言うので見てみると、これが何ともハチャメチャな日本語。走るバスの中慌てて直し始め、ホテルに着いてからも手直しと発音指導を繰り返しました。Mattは実に練習熱心。ケータイに録音してその後も練習を続けたのです。
その甲斐あって、本番では見事なトーク。若々しく粋の良い彼らのパフォーマンスと、素直で素敵な人柄に、聴衆はすっかり魅了されました。とくに、民族独特（Mattはニュージーランド先住民のマオリ系、あとの３人はサモア系）の柔らかく甘い声、絶妙のハーモニーは素晴らしいの一語でした。
彼らはアテンド役の私のことを、本番前から「チーフ、チーフ」と頼りにしてくれ、練習後のアフターグロウ（打ち上げ）でも実に愉快な時間を過ごしました。リードのLusa（愛称、=Marcellus）に、「ちょっと代わって」と頼み込み、残りの３人と一緒に「Once Upon A Time」を歌ってもらったことは、私の人生の宝物です。この上なく歌いやすかった！幸せでした。
MIBが北Gのリードを立ててハモろうと、気を使ってくれている様子がうかがえる。
みんなちゃんと、チラチラとリードを見てますね。カルテットはこうあるべきだと思います。
翌2014年7月、MIBはついに、BHSバーバーショップハーモニーソサイエティのカルテットチャンピオンになりました。私の人生に宝物をくれた、すばらしい彼らが世界チャンピオン。本当に良かった!! すぐ次の8月、TBは第７回環太平洋バーバーショップ大会（ウェリントン、ニュージーランド）に参加、私は現地でホスト役のMIBメンバーと再会を果たし、熱いハグを交わしたのでした。
最後にもう少し、2012年クライストチャーチの空港に戻りましょう。クリスマス・コンサートのゲストにRingmasters（RM）を迎えに行った時のことです。
私を日本人と見るが早いか、バリトンのEmanuelは「いってらっしゃ～い」「いただきま～す」といった日本語で話しかけてきました。聞けばEmanuel、宮崎アニメで覚えたそうで、改めて日本アニメの影響力には恐れ入りました。
テナーのRasmus は、両親と横須賀に住んでいたことがあると言って「さくらさくら」を歌い出し、私もハーモニーを付けて唱和し、一気に親しみが増したものです。
その後RMもTBの2017年5月第10回ショウのゲストとして、さらに2018年5月TBとの特別ジョイントショウで、同じ2018年9月、スゥエーデンのバーバーショップ・コーラスチームZero8のメンバーとして頻繫に来日、毎回すばらしいパフォーマンスを披露してくれています。

Memories with Musical Island Boys and Ring Masters
The guest quartets who appeared at the Tokyo Barbers (TB) show in the past are all quartet champions of the BHS Barber Shop Harmony Society or wonderful people with similar achievements. To me the most impressive was the Musical Island Boys (MIB, New Zealand), a guest at the 8th Show in 2013.
A few years ago, I learned about the MIB when I heard them appear at a music event in Christchurch (New Zealand) several times. They may still be students when I first met, who had been staying for about 5 months each year for about 15 years since 2004 (long stay). I was just surprised at how good they were!
After that, MIB and Ringmasters (RM, Sweden) came as guests to the 2012 Christmas concert of the local barbershop chorus “Canterbury Plainsmen” that I was singing every week at that time. MIB won the second place in a row at the Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention, and RM’s got the quartet championship at the same year, and the audience praised the combination of the world’s number one and two, and the excitement was climax. !!
As a member of the organizer, I also picked up both quartets at the airport and became friends with each other. By this time, it had already been decided to invite the MIB to the guest quartet of the following year, so I was able to share various background knowledge about Japan and TB in advance with them.
And finally, it is a recollection of the 8th show to Japan in 2013.
The other three members came first in the MIB of the guest, and only Matt, who was the base, went to Europe to support the Ringmasters and came to Japan on the last minute schedule, so I went to pick up Matt who came late. On the bus from the airport, Matt said, “MC will do it in Japanese, and the manuscript was translated by a New Zealander [teacher].” word. I started to fix it in a hurry in the running bus, and even after arriving at the hotel, I repeated repairs and pronunciation instruction. Matt is really enthusiastic about practicing. He recorded it on his mobile phone and continued practicing after that.
It was worth it, and it was a wonderful talk in the actual production. The audience was completely fascinated by their youthful and stylish performances and their honest and wonderful personality. In particular, the soft and sweet voice and exquisite harmony unique to the ethnic group (Matt is a Maori native of New Zealand and the other three are Samoan) were wonderful words.
They relied on me as an attendant calling “chief, chief” before the performance, and had a really fun time even after the practice afterglow (≒closing party). It’s a treasure in my life when I asked to Lusa (nickname of Marcellus) of Lead to “take over a position” and sang “Once Upon A Time” with the other three. It was extremely easy to sing! And I was so happy.（Kit KitaG Kitajima）
