  2. On the first overseas big stage
After all, I remembered I participated in the quartet section of the 4th Pacific Rim Barber Shop Tournament (Christchurch).

In the spring of 2004, I joined the Heart Strings quartet first as invited, and participated in the quartet contest in October same year, became the first to sing as a lead on the big stage overseas.
However, the practice was not as easy as I expected.

Three teams from TB Tokyo Barbers were scheduled to enter the convention, and the other two teams have been practicing a lot, but I was just starting the barber shop and I was very worried because I couldn’t keep to memorize the scores.

Also, at the TB training camp in August, when the three teams were instructed by our ex-coach Gary Steinkamp, as I worried at that time, my team Heart Strings(HS) was the least finished, and Gary taught me how to be a lead singer in the quartet. I also made an effort to go to the lessons with the feeling like clinging to the straw.

One of the three teams was crying abandoned the entry due to one of the members did not meet the schedule, and two teams including us HS would go to the main stage of the contest.

There were two divisions in the convention, “General” and “Senior”. “Senior” have two songs and judged in only one time competition, but “General”, they have to submit two semi-final songs and two final songs, for a total of four songs. HS was a general division because of my own age, so we prepared 4 songs, but as the tournament approached, someone came up with the opinion, “Let’s sing the former two songs well,” and that opinion came together.

One of the songs we sang in the semi-finals was “Make ‘em laugh”.

I think that the number of entry was a little bit less than 50 teams, and maybe 14 teams advanced to the final. Among them, the result of my HS was 11th place.

Standing ovation!! In fact, it seems that it was the first feat that Asian remained in the final. Of course, we became a hot topic at once. The score seemed to be quite good, and I will never forget the happiest memories.

After the judging, there was a lecture, and teams from Australia and New Zealand were pointed out English pronunciation by the judges, but on my HS, the attention were not payed on pronunciation and seemed to receive advice on musical expression.

Because my English was beautiful? (Laughs) It was worth the effort. (t’Dash Iwata)
